On 3/10/2024, the Emerson Police Department received a report of a Shoplifting in progress at a local retail store. Sgt. B. Rizza, Officer J. Schwarz, Capt. R. Duardo and Lt. R. Sokerka set up a perimeter, along with Westwood PD.  The first defendant, a 28-year-old male from Queens, NY, bypassed all points of sale, and was first to exit the store with concealed merchandise.  As uniformed officers attempted to place the defendant under arrest, the defendant attempted to flee on foot, discarding all the merchandise in the parking lot, before surrendering and being placed under arrest. The defendant was charged with one (1) count 3rd degree Shoplifting and one (1) count of resisting arrest.  The co-defendant, a 43-year-old male from North Bergen, NJ, was also observed by loss prevention concealing merchandise/bypassing all point of sale and was located attempting to leave the area on foot before being apprehended by officers was charged with one (1) count 3rd degree Shoplifting.  Both defendants were placed under arrest, transported to HQ, charged accordingly and ultimately transported and remanded to the Bergen County Correctional & Rehabilitation Center (BCCRC) pending their first appearance at the Central Judicial Processing (CJP) Court in Hackensack.
