Officer J. Chichizola, Officer J. Schwarz and Det. T. McDermott were dispatched to a retail store on the report of a shoplifting in progress. The responding officers received information from loss prevention employees that a male and female were using an antishoplifting countermeasure, specifically a large magnet, to remove security tags from handbags.  Both individuals bypassed all points of sales without paying for the stolen merchandise and were met outside the store by the officers and placed under arrest. The male and female defendants, a 27-year-old female from Newark, NJ and a 25-year-old male from Newark, NJ, were taken into custody and charged on a complaint summons for Shoplifting (4th deg.). A juvenile was also present during the shoplifting incident and was taken into protective custody before being released to an approved guardian. Both defendants were ultimately transported and remanded to the Bergen County Correctional & Rehabilitation Center (BCCRC) pending their first appearance at the Central Judicial Processing (CJP) Court in Hackensack and had a detainer from Roxbury PD for (2) active warrant for their arrest.
